The 1-Minute Fistula Examination




Every patient with a hemodialysis arteriovenous fistula should receive a monthly, one-minute fistula examination. A qualified expert can look a number of symptoms that can indicate various signs of access malfunction.



Check for:


  1. Aneurysm size and skin integrity

  2. Weak or pulsatile flow


  3. Prominent collateral vessels

  4. High flow & access growth

  5. Cold hands, fingernail deformity, or non-healing finger ulcers

  6. Augmented pulses when ulnar and radial pulses are occluded

  7. Engorged neck and chest veins

  8. Arm swelling

Signs of:


  1. Needling issues

  2. Access stenosis and impending access failure

  3. Access stenosis

  4. Pathologically high flow access

  5. Steal Syndrome


  6. Steal Syndrome


  7. Central vein stenosis

  8. Central vein stenosis
